How to create or modify a partition in Microsoft Windows

Symptoms

Guidance on how to create or modify a partition in Windows 10, 8/8.1, 7, and Vista.
 



Dell recommends partioning your hard drive after installaiton as you have to partition a hard drive, then format it to use it to store data.  Partitioning the drive in Windows means to section off a part of it and make that part available to the operating system. 

Choose your Operating System from the list below and follow the steps detailed:

WINDOWS 10

To create a partition from unpartitioned space follow these steps:

  1. Right click This PC and select Manage
  2. Open Disk Management
  3. Select the disk from which you want to make a partition
  4. Right click the Un-partitioned space in the bottom pane and select New Simple Volume
  5. Enter the size and click next and you are done


WINDOWS 8/8.1

To create a partition from unpartitioned space follow these steps:

  1. Hold the Windows key on your keyboard and press R
  2. This will launch the Run the utility. Type diskmgmt.msc inside the text box and press Enter. This will open the Windows Disk Management utility
  3. To create unallocated space, you need to shrink your hard drive. When you shrink your hard disk, the remaining space becomes unallocated
  4. To do this, right-click your main drive and select Shrink Volume
  5. Now you need to enter the amount you want to shrink the hard disk by in megabytes
  6. After the Shrink is done, you will then see the region of unallocated space (shaded black). Remember, this space is not yet usable
  7. Right-click the region of unallocated space and select New Simple Volume
  8. This will launch the New Simple Volume Wizard. This will guide you through the installation process
  9. Assign the disk a drive letter. You can choose any drive letter that is not currently in use
  10. Select a file system for the disk. The file system is basically the type of format or foundation"the storage device has. If you plan on installing a Windows OS to the partition select the NTFS file system
  11. Name the partition in the Volume Label text box. You can choose any name for your partition
  12. Now click Finish to create the new partition.

  

WINDOWS 7

To create a partition from unpartitioned space follow these steps:

  1. Open Computer Management by selecting the Start  button. The select Control Panel System and Security > Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management
  2. In the left pane, under Storage, select Disk Management
  3. Right-click an unallocated region on your hard disk, and then select New Simple Volume
  4. In the New Simple Volume Wizard, select Next
  5. Enter the size of the volume you want to create in megabytes (MB) or accept the maximum default size, and then select Next
  6. Accept the default drive letter or choose a different drive letter to identify the partition, and then select Next
  7. In the Format Partition dialog box, do one of the following: 
    • If you don't want to format the volume right now, select Do not format this volume, and then select Next
    • To format the volume with the default settings, select Next
  8. Review your choices, and then select Finish


WINDOWS VISTA 

To create a partition from unpartitioned space follow these steps: 
  1. Click Start ORB / Right Click Computer and select Manage
  2. From the Disk Management module you will find the disk that holds the partition listed in the gray area of the bottom of the Window
  3. Right click on the partition and select Shrink Volume. It will query for available free space then submit the size that is available to shrink the partition by.  Then in an open field it will provide space for you to type the amount you would like to shrink the partition by.  Example: size of available free space 21525 mb / Enter the amount to shrink in MB ______mb 
  4. Once you have entered the amount you want to shrink the volume by, select Shrink
  5. It will take a while for it to shrink that partition, and when it does it will leave Unallocated Space that you can make a new partition out of 
  6. To make the new partition out of the Unallocated Space, right click on that Space and select New Simple Volume.  Follow the wizard in creating the partition size, drive letter, format volume until the process is complete


MODIFY PARTITIONS 

Once your partition has been created you can modify at any time using a simple search from the start option for disk management and follow the on-screen instructions for your particuar operating system.
